In 2019 RAN got in touch with Figueira Beach Rugby International organizers to share some thoughts and ideas about its first RAN Beach Rugby 5s Tournament. It was a pleasure to help with our expertise and experience to launch a new and exciting Beach 5s Tournament.

FBRI: Hi Bryan! We would like to congratulate RAN for joining the World´s Beach 5s community by launching the 1st RAN Beach 5s Tournament in 2019. How did the idea pop up, and what´s the feedback?
RAN: The first-ever Rugby Americas North Hollywood Beach 5s tournament took place in January 2019 in partnership with USA Rugby and the Florida Rugby Union. Hundreds of athletes from far and wide took place in what was a fantastic inaugural competition! We had a DJ spinning music, fastest-sprinter competition, emcee, food, beverages and tons of fun that attracted the attention of thousands of passing-by spectators on the boardwalk in Hollywood Beach, Florida.
FBRI : How is the Beach 5s scene in North America? Fully established or just starting?
RAN: Beach Rugby across the Rugby Americas North region has taken off in recent years due to its rising popularity and our warm climate for much of the year. Many of our member unions host tournaments throughout the year as a way to attract new players, match officials and sponsors, grow the game in a safe and fun environment and teach core rugby skills to their developing athletes. USA Rugby, for example, hosted a series of five tournaments around the country in 2019.
FBRI : In January 2020 the 2nd RAN Beach 5s Rugby Tournament edition will be ON. Tell us a little bit more about the tournament and the venue where it’s held.
RAN: We’re thrilled to once again be bringing the Rugby Americas North Beach 5s tournament back to Hollywood Beach, Florida! Two inflatable fields will welcome upwards of 40 teams across different age-categories for a one-day tournament that’s looking to be bigger and better than 2019. We will once again have a DJ, food, beverages and fun for the whole family. Hollywood Beach is a vastly popular location for sun, surf and rugby.
FBRI : How would you convince anyone to go and participate in your tournament?

FBRI: Beach 5s are going viral all over the world. How do you see the future of Beach 5s?
RAN : Beach Rugby is an exciting platform to grow the sport of rugby – both high performance and grassroots – as a fun and fast-paced game for all ages! Rugby Americas North is encouraging its member unions to continue hosting tournaments and for athletes to give a try!
